1. Old Chevrolet “Corvair” wheels have the same bolt pattern as most small boat trailers. Make a trip to the junkyard and pick up two of them… You can easily & cheaply convert your boat trailer to 13” wheels.
2. Make a bunch of inexpensive shear pins for your trolling motor and you will never be without a replacement. Go to the “Welding Supply Store” and purchase a 36” length of brass welding rod the same diameter as the shear pin. Cut to length and store in your boat.
3. Don’t throw away those old socks. Use them as dust covers on your reels.
4. Purchase some “Anti-Skid Tape” at your local marina or building supply store. Put the tape on your trailer tongue and frame, and your are less apt to slip and fall while loading or unloading your boat.
5. If you travel off-road a lot, purchase a screw-in anchor, the type used to secure a house trailer and a two foot piece of pipe that will fit into the eye of the anchor. Keep them in your 4X4, and when you get stuck, simply screw the anchor into the ground with the pipe and attach your winch.
6. Don’t “pitch” that old electric tooth brush! They are ideal for cleaning fishing reels and lures, gun parts and a million other uses.
7. Purchase some length of foam pipe insulation at your local builder’s store. Slip one over each of the rods in your rod locker and you not only eliminate tangles, you protect the rods from bangs, jars and vibrations.
8. Purchase one of those battery powered, flashing orange lights you see at construction sites. If you go night fishing on a strange lake, set the light out, and easily find your way back. It will also come in handy if you breakdown along the highway.
9. Put reflective tape around the handle on all of your rods, and a couple of pieces on your tackle box. This will make it easier to find a rod while night fishing; keep you from tripping over them; and make it a WHOLE LOT easier to locate them, should they wind up in the lake or river.
10. Purchase a bottle of Vitamin B1 tablets at the drug store and take them throughout the summer months. You will be amazed how this will keep the mosquitoes away from you, and the extra vitamins can’t hurt.
